A permit is a starting point. Read the whole record.

Public records are useful when their status, scope and limitations stay attached.

Before treating a public record as a live construction opportunity, make a project note that separates what the record establishes from what still needs confirmation.

Keep five details together

  1. Issuing authority, permit number and date checked.
  2. The exact recorded status: application, approval, issuance and inspection are different events.
  3. The stated scope of work, including amendments.
  4. Any later entries that change the picture.
  5. Questions to confirm with an authorized project representative before preparing a proposal.

Start with the authority

New Orleans One Stop supports searches for permits, licenses, planning projects and violations. Jefferson Parish has separate building permit services and a permit-number tracker. Check which authority governs the site; a parish portal may not cover a municipality.

Our editorial rule: do not describe an application as construction underway. Report the source, status and date. Private homeowner details do not belong in an opportunity roundup.
