Five flood questions to ask before you make an offer.
Turn a broad concern about water into specific questions for the property and the professionals helping you.
Flood risk belongs in the early research file. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau encourages buyers to ask about flood and disaster risk before making an offer; FEMA’s FloodSmart is another starting point.
Take these questions to your team
- What information is available about this property’s flood and disaster history?
- Which official mapping and property documents should we review for this address?
- What can an insurance professional explain about available coverage, exclusions and property-specific quotes?
- What should an inspector or qualified specialist evaluate about drainage, prior damage and repairs?
- Which questions remain unresolved before our decision deadline?
Keep the answers separate
A map, inspection and insurance quote answer different questions. Save each document with its date and the person who provided it. Avoid treating a listing description or a neighbor’s experience as a complete assessment of another property.
This is a question checklist, not an evaluation of a particular home, insurance policy or transaction.
