Before the estimate: make a contractor research file.
Keep the business identity, licensing record and scope questions in one place.
A recommendation from a neighbor is a useful introduction. Follow it with your own record of the business you are considering and the work you need done.
Start with the state record
The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors offers searches by contractor name, license number, type and location. Its verification page says results reflect current licensure and registration information.
Our preparation checklist
- Ask for the exact business name and license or registration number, where applicable.
- Compare those details with the state record and save the date checked.
- Write down your proposed scope and ask the board or local permit authority which requirements apply.
- Keep separate questions for insurance documentation, references, written scope, payment terms and change orders.
- Resolve inconsistencies before signing or making a payment.
A directory listing or license search does not evaluate workmanship, establish insurance coverage or guarantee a project outcome. Keep each check with its supporting document.
